Cold Calling - Why be afraid??

Spanning my career I have come across a wide range of people, from many walks of life. A lot of them share a common phobia that they are not always willing to admit, talking to strangers on the phone.

That first time call, getting past that tough screening receptionist or PA making it to the end target and fumbling those words…………its all pretty daunting to a large chunk of UK employees.

Although this is a million miles away from my view of it I understand why…….the fear of rejection. Speaking to someone who doesn’t want to speak to us can be uncomfortable, unnerving and ultimately knock our confidence.

In my younger years I thought it’s such a simple task, picking up the phone and talking to people, arranging that meeting or chasing that all important quote or tender. What I have come to learn is, no matter how hard some people are pushed talking to strangers on the phone just isn’t for them.

If you are a person that enjoys talking to people, are not phased by rejection or the odd grumpy recipient caller, then the chances are you are working in sales or business development. and use cold calling as an important tool.

If you are one of the former that I have come to know, who do not like making these kind of calls, better to be honest with yourself and maybe employing someone who will make them for you.
